Reading Glasses

The first signs of presbyopia usually appear around the age of 40. You may find yourself holding books or your phone at arm’s length to read, needing more light to see small print clearly, or experiencing eye strain or headaches after close-up work. If these signs sound familiar, our reading test can help you estimate the strength you may need. Please note that this test is provided as a guide only and does not replace an eye exam carried out by a qualified professional.

Yes, presbyopia evolves with age. It generally progresses gradually from around 40 and tends to stabilise around the age of 60. From one year to the next, you may therefore need to increase your strength. If your reading glasses feel less effective than before, or you start holding text further away again, take our reading test to check whether a higher strength would suit you better. Regular eye exams are also recommended to monitor your vision.

No, reading glasses do not damage your eyes or make presbyopia worse. Some people feel they become dependent on them, but this is simply due to the natural progression of presbyopia, not to the glasses themselves. However, choosing a strength that is too high can cause discomfort, such as headaches or dizziness. That’s why we recommend selecting the right strength for your needs with the help of our reading test, and removing your reading glasses to see clearly at a distance.
